About Me

I am ideally situated for thatching in both Norfolk and Suffolk, being based in the village of Geldeston in the Waveney Valley. I have always lived in this area and hope to be here for a long time yet to come, so the thought of leaving my mark, in the form of beautiful, durable thatched roofs, makes me a very happy man.

My thatching career began in 2002, and I spent several years training under the tutelage of a Master Thatcher. With many different skills to grasp, the process is long, but ultimately worthwhile. Most of my work is in South Norfolk and North Suffolk, but I have ventured as far as Northumberland and the Hebrides to thatch roofs!

Nick Walker - Master Thatcher

After extensive training, I set up my own business in 2010. Shortly afterwards, following a thorough assessment of my solo work, I was exceptionally proud to be accepted as a full member of the prestigious East Anglia Master Thatchers Association. Widely recognised as having the highest standards of any thatching association in the country, the EAMTA represents the very best of thatchers in the region. For the previous five years, I have held the post of Secretary, placing me at the very heart of East Anglian thatching.

While some thatching companies employ numerous workers to increase turnover, I have always been more driven by the craft element of the work than the business side. I worked alone for four years and since 2014 I have worked with Olly as my apprentice. By working on a smaller scale, I am directly involved carrying out the majority of the work myself, meaning that the roof is thatched and overseen by a master thatcher, as opposed to number of semi-skilled labourers.

I have carried out projects for many clients, including extensive work for Norfolk and Suffolk County Councils, and Waveney District Council, and I am proud to be the thatcher of choice for them. I have worked on structures as diverse as 11th Century churches to modern passivhaus designed eco-builds, from boathouses to duckhouses, as well as numerous farmhouses, barns and cottages.

Have a look at my gallery for some examples of my work. It is a job that I truly love, and in which I take a huge amount of pride – I am fortunate indeed to make my living in such a way.
